U.S. President Donald Trump is escalating trade tensions with Canada, threatening to impose a 50 per cent tariff on all aircraft sold into the United States unless Canada immediately certifies Gulfstream business jets made by an American manufacturer.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the U.S. would move to decertify Bombardier Global Express jets and all aircraft manufactured in Canada until the certification issue is resolved. He accused Canada of unfairly blocking Gulfstream aircraft from entering the Canadian market and warned the tariff would take effect if no immediate action is taken.
Prime Minister Mark Carney declined to comment on the threat while attending an event in Ottawa on Thursday. Transport Canada and the federal transport minister’s office have been contacted for a response, while Bombardier and Gulfstream have not yet commented.
The dispute comes amid growing strain in Canada–U.S. trade relations, with broader negotiations on the future of North American free trade set to begin later this year.
