Automaker Stellantis is reportedly in discussions with China-based Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology to bring electric vehicle production to the idle Brampton Assembly Plant.
Reports from Bloomberg News say the talks are centred on assembling EV kits shipped from China at the facility, which has been closed for retooling since 2024. Stellantis has not confirmed the deal but says it is exploring future options for the site.
The development comes after the company shifted Jeep Compass production to the U.S., impacting hundreds of workers. Around 200 employees have since moved to Windsor, while others remain laid off or on reduced pay.
Union president Vito Beato says recent talks with the company were encouraging, though no clear plan has been announced. Meanwhile, Mayor Patrick Brown says city measures are in place to ensure the plant continues to support auto jobs in Brampton, raising hopes that work could return to the facility.
