Prime Minister Mark Carney is urging Canadian provinces to put U.S. alcohol back on store shelves as Canada and the United States move closer to a new trade agreement.
Trade talks continued for a third straight day Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump paused a new round of threatened tariffs on Canadian goods.
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said Carney asked provinces to end the boycott of American whiskey and other alcohol products, which were pulled from many Canadian markets last year in response to U.S. tariffs.
The potential deal could also address major Canadian industries, including steel, aluminum, and automobiles. Reports suggest U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum could fall from 50% to 25%, while vehicle tariffs could drop to 15%.
Carney says “significant progress” has been made in the talks. Officials described the negotiations as positive.
With a deal potentially coming soon, businesses on both sides of the border are hoping for fewer tariffs and a more stable Canada-U.S. trade relationship.
