Canada is hitting back after the latest round of U.S. tariffs, announcing retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on nearly C$28 billion worth of American goods.
The new measures, set to take effect September 8, will target products including steel, furniture, fresh tuna, and cotton T-shirts. Officials say the list is designed to match Canadian products affected by U.S. tariffs.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne called the move a “proportionate” and “strategic” response, while announcing an additional C$7.5 billion in support for Canadian businesses and workers affected by the trade dispute.
The escalating tariff battle could mean higher costs for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border, while putting pressure on supply chains built over decades.
