After a decade in power, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his decision to resign on January 6th, 2025. It, undoubtedly, came as no surprise to most of the Canadians as his government has been facing backlash, growing criticism and quite a decline in Mr. Trudeau’s popularity in the recent times.
Amid all the speculations over next Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Trudeau, yesterday, announced that he will not be running for Re-elections as an MP in the upcoming Federal Elections of Canada. He has won twice from Montreal riding, since 2008.
“I am completely focused on doing the job that Canadians elected me to do in a pivotal time right now,” Trudeau spoke. “The U.S. inauguration and the weeks that follow are something that are of deep, deep importance to Canadians, and we are entirely focused on that as a team.”
Trudeau made the above statement comment during a press conference on Wednesday, following his first in-person meeting with Canada’s premiers in nearly two years.
This was a meeting between Trudeau and the country premiers including Canada’s ambassador to the United States along with a few federal cabinet ministers. It was convened specifically to figure out the strategy to respond to US President elect Mr. Donald Trump’s recent tariff threats.
“I do want to say that (Saskatchewan Premier) Scott (Moe) and (Ontario Premier) Doug (Ford), and anumber of the folks who’ve been around a while have been extraordinarily invaluable in these conversations, in this Team Canada approach,” Trudeau mentioned.
Although, Trudeau is all set to resign as prime minister in March 2025, following a leadership race, he mentioned that he has not given thought to what he will do next as he remains focused on countering U.S. tariff threats.
On the other hand, race to replace Trudeau has not officially started yet, but a few of the well-known Liberal leaders and would-be contenders have already started to announce their intentions of running for the office formally. Liberal party has already stated that those interested in throwing their hat in the ring, need to notify the party officially and make an initial payment toward the entry fee by January 23rd.
Putting all the speculations to an end,the Liberal party’s new leader will be announced on March 9, a date which most of the Canadians seem to be waiting for.
