The office of Ontario Premier Doug Ford has confirmed that the Lieutenant-Governor Edith Dumont, has accepted his request to dissolve the 43rd parliament of the Province of Ontario after their meeting last Friday.

Although, the next elections for Ontario had been scheduled for more than a year from now, but Ford has repeated the importance of a new mandate from the electorate, in order to deal with U.S. President Donald Trump & his antics, something he emphasized at a news conference Tuesday morning ahead of his meeting with the lieutenant-governor.

Referring to these speculations, Mr. Ford mentioned, “This is going be a battle for the next four years. I want to make sure I have a strong mandate to outlast President Trump.” Mr. Doug Ford is currently seeking a third consecutive majority mandate for his right-of-center Progressive Conservatives party, after his sweeping previous victories in the 2022 & 2018.

The Lt. Gov. also called for the issuance of writs for the general election to be issued and named February 27 as the date of Ontario’s next general election.

According to the Ontario Election Act, as amended in 2005, the writ for an election shall be dated on a Wednesday. The procedure of drawing up the election writs launches a 28-day election period for Ontario. The act also stated that the Polling day of elections shall be the fifth Thursday after the date of the writ, Hence, Thursday, the 27th of February!!

The Ontario province is currently home to just under 40% of Canada’s total population of 40 million people & is Canada’s manufacturing heartland apart from being world’s largest sub-sovereign borrower. Trump moving forward with the imposition of 25% tariff on all Canadian imports will certainly be bad for the province.

Other Ontario Election Stats for 2025:

Total Electoral districts: 124.
Number required for forming a majority government: 63

Current Provincial leaders:

Other than Mr. Ford, some of the following big names are expected to be in fray:

  • John Jordan, for Conservatives, in Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston.
  • Rob Rainer, current Mayor of Tay Valley Township, for Liberals in Queen’s Park.
  • Longtime MPP & Government House Leader Steve Clark, for the Conservatives in Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes.
  • Lorna Jean Edmonds, for Liberals, opposite to Steve Clark.
