Chinese automaker BYD has reportedly shown interest in taking over Stellantis’ idle Brampton Assembly Plant as Canada-U.S. trade tensions continue to grow.
According to Brampton-News, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said BYD inquired about the facility about six months ago. The plant has been idle since late 2023 after Stellantis paused plans to retool it for the next-generation Jeep Compass.
BYD reportedly discussed using the facility to produce electric buses, rather than passenger vehicles. The company already manufactures electric buses in California.
Chinese automaker Leapmotor and Canadian defence companies Roshel Inc. and Dominion Dynamics have also reportedly expressed interest in the site.
For now, the Brampton plant remains idle, while Stellantis plans to build the next-generation Compass at its Illinois facility starting in 2027. The big question is whether a new investor can bring jobs and manufacturing back to Brampton.
