BRAMPTON, ON – In a move praised by unions and industry watchers, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and the City Council have unanimously passed a motion to permanently designate the Stellantis assembly plant for vehicle production, securing the future of thousands of Canadian auto jobs.
The decision ensures the 2000 Williams Parkway site remains dedicated to automotive assembly and related manufacturing, protecting Canada’s industrial capacity amid ongoing trade pressures and Stellantis’ previous announcement to shift Jeep Compass production to Illinois.
Unifor leaders hailed the move as a win for workers:
“Our members demanded action, and the City delivered,” said Lana Payne, Unifor National President.
“By protecting this land, Brampton ensures car production stays in Canada now and for generations to come,” added Vito Beato, Unifor Local 1285 President.
The move comes after months of uncertainty, as Stellantis paused retooling and threatened to relocate production, stirring concerns over collective agreements and government investments.
With this motion, Brampton sends a strong message: it stands with its workers, champions Canadian manufacturing, and sets a model for other municipalities under pressure to defend strategic industrial lands.
