Prime Minister Mark Carney says U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest tariff threat against Canada is closely tied to upcoming negotiations on CUSMA, the North American free-trade pact.
Speaking in Ottawa on Monday, Carney said Trump is a tough negotiator and that his recent comments and positioning should be viewed in the broader context of trade talks.
Over the weekend, Trump threatened to impose 100 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods if Ottawa reaches a trade deal with China, while also suggesting the CUSMA agreement may no longer be relevant.
Despite the heated rhetoric, Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc says talks with U.S. officials have been productive, with both sides signaling a willingness to move forward as the mandatory CUSMA review approaches.
