This holiday season, at least one Canadian retailer is moving away from Canada Post after relying on the Crown corporation for more than a decade. Province of Canada co-founder Julie Brown says ongoing labour disputes and past strikes made the service too unreliable during the busiest time of year.
Despite a tentative labour agreement reached earlier this week, Brown says last year’s holiday disruptions left her business scrambling, forcing them to switch to four or five alternative carriers to avoid delays. She says the ongoing uncertainty forced her team to focus on shipping challenges rather than customer experience.
Other Canadian businesses, including shops in Kitchener and Toronto, have made similar moves, citing a lack of trust in Canada Post’s reliability. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says a growing number of companies are choosing to permanently move away from the postal service.
Canada Post recently reported a $407-million loss in the second quarter and has acknowledged labour instability has hurt its operations. While Brown says she would consider returning to Canada Post in the future, she adds it won’t happen until there’s long-term stability in place.
