Donald Trump Renews ‘51st State’ Push After Canada Enters Technical Recession

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again stirred debate after reviving his long-standing claim that Canada should become the “51st State.” The comment came shortly after new data confirmed that Canada had entered a technical recession, marking its first economic contraction since 2020.

Trump shared the message on Truth Social alongside a news report about Canada’s slowing economy, reigniting a topic that has repeatedly drawn criticism from Canadian leaders.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford quickly responded, saying, “Canada will never be the 51st state. Canada is not for sale.” Prime Minister Mark Carney also brushed off Trump’s remarks, saying the federal government won’t respond to every social media post and remains focused on strengthening Canada’s economy.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre dismissed the suggestion as “ridiculous,” arguing that Canadians should stay focused on the country’s economic challenges rather than political rhetoric from south of the border.

Trump’s latest comments come at a sensitive time, with Canada preparing for CUSMA trade negotiations with the United States and Mexico. Despite the renewed rhetoric, many Canadians have downplayed the remarks, saying they remain confident in the country’s independence and future.
