Canada’s Carney Criticized for British Spelling Choice

Canadian language experts are asking Prime Minister Mark Carney to stop using British spelling in official government documents and switch fully to Canadian English instead.

Linguists and editors noticed British spellings like “globalisation” and “catalyse” appearing in Carney’s government documents, including the federal budget. They say Canadian English has been the standard in government communication for decades and should remain that way.

In an open letter, the experts said Canadian English is an important part of the country’s identity and pride. They pointed out that Canadian spelling is unique, blending British and American influences, while also including Canadian-only words like “toque” and “washroom.”

The letter warns that using British spelling could confuse Canadians about what proper Canadian spelling actually is. The group says sticking to Canadian English is a simple way to show national pride.

The letter was signed by Editors Canada, several university linguistics professors, and the editor-in-chief of the Canadian English Dictionary. Carney’s office has been contacted for comment.
