A 39-year-old Brampton woman is facing multiple charges after allegedly using someone else’s identity to finance a 2027 Mercedes SUV in Durham Region, police say.
According to Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), the incident happened on September 30, when a woman submitted an online application to purchase the luxury SUV at a Mercedes-Benz dealership.
Police allege the application included identification documents, including a Canadian passport displaying the suspect’s photo but the victim’s details. The financing was approved through a financial institution.
Before the vehicle could be handed over, the victim was notified about the purchase and reported the suspected identity fraud to police and the dealership.
On October 8, police took the woman into custody at the dealership when she returned to finalize the purchase and collect the SUV.
The Brampton woman faces five charges, including fraud over $5,000, possession of an identity document, personation, uttering a forged document, and possession of cocaine.
She has since been released and is expected to appear in court at a later date. The allegations have yet to be proven in court, while Durham police continue to investigate.
Anyone with relevant information can reach Detective Stuart of the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 5353, or share information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
