Why Life Sciences Are Becoming Brampton’s Economic Lifeline

BRAMPTON, ON — Brampton is positioning itself as a rising force in Canada’s life sciences sector, with new developments signalling a major shift toward innovation, healthcare, and research-driven growth.

The opening of a new medical school by Toronto Metropolitan University marks a historic milestone—the first in the Greater Toronto Area in over a century. Local leaders say it’s a key step in strengthening Brampton’s role along Ontario’s growing innovation corridor, stretching from Kitchener to Oshawa.

Experts believe training future physicians in problem-solving and innovation could help turn them into job creators, boosting both healthcare and economic development in the region.

But to truly take the sector to the next level, officials say Brampton needs a critical piece of infrastructure: a wet lab facility. These high-cost labs are essential for medical research and biotech development—and currently, there’s a shortage across Ontario.

City leaders are actively advocating for funding support from higher levels of government, noting that successful med-tech hubs typically have both wet and dry lab spaces nearby. With interest already coming from federal partners, there’s growing optimism that this gap could soon be filled.

According to Brampton’s economic development team, the city already has a strong foundation, with major players like Medtronic, Boston Scientific, Sun Pharma, and Dynacare operating locally. The next step is to connect these established companies with startups and academic institutions to build a thriving healthcare ecosystem.

With over 100 biotech firms located within a short drive and nearly 40% of Ontario’s life sciences companies based in the GTA, Brampton is aiming to attract even more investment and talent.

Adding to the momentum, new doctors are also on the way. While the first full graduating class from TMU’s medical program is expected in 2029, a group of newly trained physicians is set to begin practicing as early as this fall—bringing fresh energy to the local healthcare system.

🇨🇦 With the right infrastructure and continued investment, Brampton is making a strong case to become a leading hub for life sciences and medical innovation in Canada.
