Several Jewish Canadians are among the 80 individuals appointed to the Order of Canada in the latest round of honours announced on Dec. 31, recognizing outstanding contributions across a wide spectrum of Canadian life. The list includes former Supreme Court of Canada justices Rosalie Abella and Michael Moldaver, Holocaust survivors and educators, and leaders in law, arts and culture, media, social justice, science, and philanthropy.

Governor General Mary Simon said the appointees reflect the spirit of service and leadership that defines the country’s highest civilian honour. Justice Abella was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada, recognized for her groundbreaking work in advancing equality rights, workplace fairness, and Charter protections during her tenure on the Supreme Court. Justice Moldaver was also named a companion, honoured for his lasting impact on criminal law, legal education, and Canada’s justice system.

Holocaust survivors such as Toronto educator Elly Gotz were also recognized for their decades-long commitment to education, remembrance, and combating hate. Other appointees include prominent cultural figures, artists, journalists, academics, and community builders whose work has shaped Canada’s social and cultural landscape. Together, the latest appointments highlight the depth, diversity, and lasting influence of Jewish Canadians in strengthening the nation and enriching public life.
