As 2026 kicks off, Brampton is rolling out major changes for landlords and residents. The city-wide Residential Landlord Licensing program will expand, requiring landlords of properties with up to four units to register and complete an online learning module before renting. Failure to register could result in fines up to $1,500, while participating landlords receive free smoke alarms.
Bylaw penalties are also getting tougher. First offences for snow clearing interference, driveway blocking, and other infractions are doubling, with repeat violations climbing to $750. Illegal rental units now carry fines up to $1,500, while other RRL violations see stepped-up penalties.
New carbon monoxide alarm rules come into effect, requiring alarms near every sleeping area and on every storey, including units above garages or fuel-burning appliances. Residents are urged to test alarms monthly, replace batteries yearly, and be aware of CO poisoning signs.
Brampton Transit routes will also see updates early in 2026, marking a busy start to the new year for the city.
