Police Increase RIDE Spot Checks While Impaired Driving Charges Decline in Mississauga and Brampton

Peel Regional Police significantly increased roadside enforcement during the 2025 Holiday Season RIDE campaign in Mississauga and Brampton, checking more than 16,000 vehicles — roughly 4,000 more stops than the year before — while laying fewer impaired driving charges.

The six-week campaign, running from mid-November to Dec. 31, resulted in 101 impaired driving charges and over 1,100 total charges, including Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code offences. Officers conducted more than 6,400 roadside screening tests as part of the seasonal effort, which was carried out in partnership with MADD Canada.

Police say the results reflect stronger enforcement and growing public awareness, but caution that drug-impaired driving is on the rise, creating new challenges for frontline officers. Peel police continue to emphasize that impaired driving — whether caused by alcohol or drugs — remains one of the leading causes of serious collisions, stressing that these incidents are entirely preventable.
