Carney to Meet Chinese Leaders as Canada Pushes Forward on Trade Talks

Prime Minister Mark Carney is heading to Beijing next week, marking the first visit by a Canadian prime minister to China in nearly 10 years.

Carney will be in China from January 13 to 17, where he plans to talk trade, energy, agriculture and global security with Chinese leaders. The trip comes as Canada seeks to strengthen ties beyond the U.S., particularly amid trade uncertainty under President Donald Trump.

The visit follows Carney’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea last October and signals a possible reset in Canada–China relations after a long-running trade dispute.

Tensions have been high since Canada imposed steep tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, steel and aluminum in 2024. China hit back with heavy tariffs on Canadian farm products, including canola — a move that’s been tough on Western Canadian farmers.

Carney has said the relationship is at a “turning point” and believes renewed dialogue could bring economic benefits for Canadians. His government is aiming to expand non-U.S. exports as trade talks with Washington remain on pause.

The China visit marks a key step in Canada’s push to diversify trade and steady its economy in a changing global landscape.
