U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he’s ending all trade talks with Canada after a political ad criticizing tariffs sparked controversy.
In a post on his social media platform, Trump wrote, “All trade negotiations with Canada are hereby terminated.”
The ad, which featured former president Ronald Reagan speaking against tariffs, was called by Trump an attempt to influence a U.S. Supreme Court decision on the legality of his tariffs.
Since returning to office, Trump has reintroduced 35% tariffs on imports from Canada, including cars, steel, and aluminum — though most trade remains exempt under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
The Canadian government said it had hoped to reach new deals on steel, aluminum, and energy, but those talks are now on hold.
The U.S. Supreme Court is set to review Trump’s emergency tariff powers on November 5.
