Canada is entering the new year under a continued blast of severe winter weather, affecting large swaths of the country. Earlier this week, a strong storm swept through Ontario and Quebec, bringing freezing rain, heavy snow, and gusty winds. The storm left tens of thousands without power and made travel extremely hazardous. Millions of residents were placed under yellow and orange weather warnings as Environment and Climate Change Canada reported that cold temperatures and snow squalls would persist throughout the week.
In British Columbia, a stalled atmospheric river has dumped heavy rain along the North Coast, raising flooding concerns. On Haida Gwaii, a section of Highway 16 was washed out, cutting off a key north-south route and disrupting access to hospitals and essential infrastructure. Across the country, additional snow and strong winds are expected in parts of Atlantic Canada, while major airports in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa continue to experience flight delays as airlines work to clear backlogs caused by the severe weather.
