The pilots’ union issued a 72-hour strike notice on Sunday, saying they will stop work on Wednesday if no deal is reached. In response, Air Transat will begin cancelling flights on Monday and plans to fully suspend operations by Tuesday to avoid last-minute disruptions.
The airline called the strike notice “premature,” but the union says pilots have been bargaining for nearly a year for fair pay, better benefits, and updated work rules. According to the Air Line Pilots Association, 99% of Air Transat’s 750 pilots voted in favour of strike action.
Union representatives say they don’t want to strike but feel management has left them no choice. Air Transat argues it has made “generous offers” and has been negotiating in good faith.
The airline says the early cancellations are needed to ensure passengers, crew, and aircraft aren’t stranded if the strike begins on Wednesday.
