If you’re planning to fly out of Vancouver International Airport (YVR) this holiday season, chances are you’re not heading to the U.S.
Statistics Canada’s latest report shows that flights from Canada to the United States dropped again in October — marking the ninth month in a row of declining travel across the border.
Despite that, Canadian airports are still getting busier. More than 5 million travellers passed through the country’s eight largest airports in October, up 4.5% compared to last year. YVR alone saw over 900,000 passengers, a jump of 6.6% year over year.

But fewer of those travellers are going south. Only 24.4% of airport traffic in October was headed to the U.S., down from 28% last year. Instead, more Canadians are choosing to explore their own country, with domestic travel up 8.5%.
American travel to Canada is also growing slightly, with arrivals by air rising 1.3% from last year.
On the ground, fewer British Columbians are crossing the border too. Washington state’s Whatcom Council of Governments reported a 37% drop in B.C. licence plates entering the U.S. by land in October.
Overall, the trend is clear: Canadians are flying more — just not as often to the United States.
