Canada’s Carney stresses unity in the face of challenges at home

Prime Minister Mark Carney struck a confident, made-in-Canada tone at home this week, calling on Canadians to pull together as the country faces economic uncertainty and a shifting global order.

Speaking in Quebec City ahead of a federal cabinet retreat, Carney promised quick, ambitious action to strengthen the economy. He also pushed back at comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, saying Canada doesn’t thrive because of the U.S. — it thrives because of Canadians.

Fresh off a high-profile appearance in Davos, Carney warned the old global rulebook isn’t coming back and said Canada must stand up for its values in a divided world. While his message earned praise at home and abroad, it’s also stirred some tension with Washington as key trade talks loom.

At home, Carney says the focus now is action — tackling cost-of-living pressures, cutting internal trade barriers, fast-tracking major projects, and building stronger ties beyond the U.S. His message was clear: unity first, and results next.
