NORTH PORTAL, SK — A Brampton man is facing charges after border officers discovered drugs during a vehicle inspection at a Canada–U.S. crossing in Saskatchewan.
According to the Canada Border Services Agency, officers conducted a search on March 4 at the North Portal port of entry, which connects North Dakota with Saskatchewan. During the inspection, authorities say 67 grams of opium were found in the possession of a man attempting to enter Canada.
Following the discovery, the case was handed over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Estevan to continue the criminal investigation.
Police later charged Iqbal Kahlon, 53, of Brampton, with unlawfully importing a Schedule I substance and smuggling goods into Canada.
Kahlon is scheduled to appear in Estevan Provincial Court on March 20 as the case moves forward.
