Brampton Politics Gets Wild, Eh?
Things aren’t so sleepy in Brampton anymore, folks. Between accused extortionists, an ex-con, and some seriously colourful candidates getting involved in local campaigns, even the police chief and the mayor are speaking up.
Two men charged in separate extortion busts, Dupinderdeep Cheema and Tejinder Tatla, have been out backing council hopeful Gurpreet Dhillon, who’s trying to stage a comeback after losing his seat in 2022 following a sexual harassment finding by the city’s Integrity Commissioner. Dhillon maintains his innocence, and none of the charges against Cheema or Tatla have been tested in court.
Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah called it “very frustrating.” Mayor Patrick Brown, who’s after a third term, asked what input these folks would expect at a table that oversees the police budget.
Meanwhile, rival mayoral candidate Prabh Gill is backed by Avi Dhaliwal, who served time in the U.S. on cross-border drug trafficking charges. Brown’s camp says that makes Gill soft on crime.
Bottom line: voters heading to the polls Monday aren’t just picking candidates; they’re deciding who gets to influence city hall. Do your homework, Brampton.
