More Canadians are choosing to explore their own country, and the shift is costing U.S. tourism hundreds of millions of dollars.

New Statistics Canada data shows Canadians made nearly 500,000 fewer trips to the United States during the first three months of 2026, spending about $800 million less than in the same period last year.

Instead, more Canadians are travelling within the country. Domestic travel spending reached $14.5 billion, up from $13.8 billion a year earlier.

For many travellers, the choice is about discovering Canada while supporting local businesses and tourism operators.

Meanwhile, Americans continue to cross the border. U.S. visitors spent nearly $3 billion in Canada during the first quarter of 2026, an increase of roughly $500 million year over year.
