Despite Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, Russian enriched uranium is still entering Western nuclear supply chains — including Canadian-owned Westinghouse Electric in the U.S.
Shipping data analyzed by The Fifth Estate shows Westinghouse received Russian low-enriched uranium from Moscow-based Tenex. In March 2026, one shipment reportedly carried 50,612 kilograms of uranium from Russia to Westinghouse’s South Carolina facility.
The U.S. banned Russian enriched uranium imports in 2024 but allows waivers when alternative supplies aren’t available. Those waivers are set to expire in 2028.
Westinghouse is 51% owned by Toronto-based Brookfield Renewable Partners and 49% by Saskatchewan-based Cameco.
The continued shipments are raising concerns over Western dependence on Russian nuclear fuel while the war in Ukraine continues.
