Trump Warns He Could Block Opening of Key Detroit–Canada Bridge

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a Canadian-financed project linking Detroit and Windsor, unless Canada agrees to give the United States at least 50 per cent ownership and meets additional conditions.

In a social media post on Monday, Trump said the bridge would not open until the U.S. is “fully compensated,” adding that negotiations should begin immediately. The $4.6-billion bridge, funded by the Canadian government, is expected to open in early 2026 and was recently designated an official port of entry by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The bridge is intended to ease congestion at the Ambassador Bridge and improve cross-border trade. A University of Windsor study estimates it could save truckers up to $2.3 billion over 30 years by reducing wait times.

Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin warned that cancelling the project would hurt businesses, disrupt supply chains, and cost jobs on both sides of the border.

The dispute comes amid broader U.S.–Canada trade tensions, including tariff threats and upcoming negotiations to renew the USMCA trade agreement.
