Mark Wiseman Named Canada’s Ambassador to Washington by PM Carney

Prime Minister Mark Carney has named financier Mark Wiseman as Canada’s next ambassador to the United States, at a key moment in Canada–U.S. relations. Wiseman will take on the role on Feb. 15 and will play a major part in talks ahead of the 2026 review of the USMCA free trade deal.

Carney says Wiseman brings deep experience and strong connections that will help protect Canadian workers, businesses, and institutions during upcoming negotiations. Wiseman replaces Kirsten Hillman, who stepped down earlier this month.

Wiseman, 55, previously led investment funds at the Canada Pension Plan and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, and later held a senior role at BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager. He currently chairs Alberta Investment Management Corp.

The appointment comes as Canada and the U.S. navigate trade tensions and prepare for possible renegotiations of the USMCA, originally signed during Donald Trump’s first term.

Canada remains the United States’ largest trading partner, with $3.6 billion worth of goods and services crossing the border daily, and Canada supplying most of the U.S.’s crude oil imports, electricity, and key industrial materials.
