BRAMPTON, ON — A tragic canoeing incident at a popular Brampton conservation area has claimed the life of one man, authorities confirmed.
According to Peel Regional Police, emergency crews responded to reports of boaters in distress at Heart Lake Conservation Area around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 11. The call prompted a swift search-and-rescue operation.
Firefighters from the Brampton Fire Department arrived within minutes and located a woman in the water after the canoe capsized. However, the man who had been with her was initially unaccounted for.
Police noted that the conservation area was closed at the time of the incident.
The area was closed, and no one should have been on the water or boating at the lake,” the constable stated.
Rescue efforts continued for several hours, and with assistance from the police marine unit, the body of the missing boater was recovered on Sunday afternoon.
Investigators have since launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident. While officials describe the situation as unusual, they have stated that there is no indication of foul play, and all possibilities are being examined.
The tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations and closures at public recreational areas.
