Canada’s First Grocery Benefit Payment Is Coming This Week — Here’s What to Know

Eligible Canadians will receive the first payment under the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) on July 3, offering extra support as grocery prices and everyday living costs remain high.

Previously known as the HST/GST credit, the benefit was expanded by Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this year to help Canadians better manage rising food and household expenses. The payment is separate from the HST/GST top-up issued in June.

According to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the benefit is calculated each July based on family income and household size from the previous year’s tax return.

Eligible recipients may receive up to:

$679 for a single individual
$890 for married or common-law couples
$234 for each eligible child under 19

The new benefit is 25 per cent higher than the former HST/GST credit, with payments set to continue quarterly through 2031. The next payment is scheduled for Oct. 5, 2026.
