Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is visiting Canada this week for the first time in nearly a year, as Ukraine continues to face deadly Russian missile and drone attacks.
Zelenskyy will be in Canada from Wednesday to Friday, travelling with his wife, Olena Zelenska. The visit includes stops in Calgary, Toronto and North Bay, according to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office.
Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet Carney in Calgary on Thursday morning. The two leaders are expected to take part in a signing ceremony and hold a news conference afterward.
The visit will focus on strengthening defence, economic, and energy co-operation between Canada and Ukraine. The leaders are also expected to discuss the growing humanitarian cost of Russia’s war and Canada’s continued support for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy’s journey was briefly disrupted Tuesday after Moldova closed its airspace following drone activity. A Russian drone reportedly crashed near a village, causing several fires but no injuries. The closure delayed three flights, including Zelenskyy’s.
The Ukrainian president arrives in Canada as Kyiv continues to seek stronger international support and more air defence systems to protect civilians from ongoing Russian attacks.
Carney has repeatedly reaffirmed Canada’s support for Ukraine, including during his visit to Kyiv last year, when Canada announced an additional $2 billion in military aid.
