Transport Canada says it is closely monitoring developments after Air India announced it had grounded its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft following reports of a possible issue involving a fuel control switch. In a statement, the federal aviation regulator said the decision applies to aircraft registered in India and confirmed it is in ongoing communication with both the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Canadian air operators.
Transport Canada noted that the FAA, as the aircraft’s State of Design authority, is responsible for investigating any potential safety concerns and issuing airworthiness directives if required. Canadian airlines operating Dreamliners are expected to comply with any such directives before flying.
India’s aviation regulator later said its review found the fuel switches on the grounded aircraft to be satisfactory. However, Transport Canada says its position remains unchanged as it continues to assess the situation, particularly in light of Boeing’s recent safety challenges and last year’s fatal Air India Dreamliner crash that claimed 260 lives, including one Canadian.
