Ontario City Set to Light Up the Sky With Free Fireworks Festival Next Month

Mark your calendars, Brampton. On Nov. 8, Sesquicentennial Park will fill with music, dance and colour as the city hosts the fourth edition of its Diwali Mela, and entry won’t cost you a loonie.

Organizers expect thousands to turn out for an evening built around the Festival of Lights. Performers will bring regional styles from across India to the stage, from classical dance to folk acts. There’s also a hands-on part for visitors: sessions where anyone can pick up a few popular dance moves.

Headlining is British-Indian singer-songwriter Sukhshinder Shinda, who will play a free show of his Indi-pop hits. The night ends with a drone display followed by fireworks over the park, in keeping with how Diwali is marked in India.

Mayor Patrick Brown says Diwali is a season he looks forward to every year, when neighbourhoods across the city come together. He described the Mela as a welcoming spot for families to celebrate and keep Brampton’s community spirit going.

Skipping the drive? The city is running free transit shuttles every half hour from Mount Pleasant GO Station, Brampton Soccer Centre, Sheridan College, and Gore Meadows Community Centre.

When: Nov. 8, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Where: Sesquicentennial Park, 11475 Bramlea Rd., Brampton, Ont.
