A new police team targeting break-ins and car thefts in Mississauga and Brampton is already making a strong impact.
The Peel Regional Police BEAR Unit (Break-and-Enter and Auto Response), launched on Sept. 1, has so far arrested 21 people, laid 165 charges, and recovered 80 stolen vehicles in just three months.
The plainclothes squad focuses on organized crime, especially coordinated break-ins and auto thefts that have been on the rise across Peel Region.
Police say the pilot program is helping disrupt criminal networks while also supporting victims. Officers have contacted 95 percent of victims within 72 hours, offering updates, resources, and crime prevention support.
Deputy Chief Marc Andrews says the unit is making Peel safer and sending a clear message that crime will not be tolerated.
The pilot will run until March, after which it will be reviewed for possible long-term use.
