BRAMPTON, ON — A Brampton teenager is in custody after police linked the youth to two armed ride-share carjackings that took place just a day apart in the city.
According to Peel Regional Police, the first incident happened on the evening of March 1 near Cedar Lake Crescent. Investigators say a ride-share driver picked up a passenger who was wearing a face covering. During the trip, the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun, ordered the driver out of the vehicle, and drove off with the car.
A second carjacking occurred the following night, March 2, near Salisbury Circle. In that case, another ride-share driver was robbed at gunpoint after picking up a passenger, who then fled in the victim’s vehicle.
Officers from 22 Division quickly tracked down the second stolen vehicle in the area. Police say the suspect ran from the scene on foot and tossed away a loaded firearm before being arrested a short distance away. Officers later recovered the weapon.
Investigators from the Central Robbery Bureau determined that the same suspect was involved in both incidents. A 17-year-old from Brampton has now been charged with multiple offences, including robbery, firearm-related charges, possession of stolen property, and failing to comply with court orders.
The youth appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton for a bail hearing. Under Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act, the identity of the accused cannot be released.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
