There’s something very captivating about vegetarian food and its ability to go above and beyond meat-centric dishes and make it all about ingredients that deserve more shine. Brampton’s starting to understand how to be more friendly to its vegetarian demographic and here are a few spots that are sure to convince you of that:
5) Trish Juice
All the way back in the historic year of 2017, Brampton was blessed with Trish Juice near Main and Queen in downtown Brampton. Serving up fresh smoothies, shakes, smoothie bowls, bubble tea, juice (of course), grilled wraps, salads and more, pretty much anything you get here (minus the shakes and bubble tea – those are for when you decide to treat yo’self) is healthy and high quality.
Looking for a smoothie? The most popular is the Cuban, with pineapple, mango, orange, lemon, honey, coconut milk, and mint. How about a smoothie in a bowl? Try the super green smoothie bowl, with kale, spinach, banana, strawberry, and almond milk – and mine was topped with walnuts, coconut, blueberries, and raspberries. If you want to be really healthy, you can get a shot of wheatgrass, ginger, or even turmeric here, or you can add some chia seeds, flax seeds, or extra protein to your smoothie, salad, or smoothie bowl. Vegans and vegetarian food alike will find a solid, healthy, and delicious option at Trish Juice for a reasonable price.
4) Anjappar Chettinad
At Hurontario Street and Steeles Avenue, Anjappar Chettinad has a wide variety of veggie dosas, which are a filling and tasty option for vegetarians! Their most popular dosa is their Mysore masala dosa, and for good reason. Anjappar’s Mysore masala dosa had the best filling and crepe on this list – their dosa was crispy, and their potato and onion filling was flavourful and had a good amount of spice.
Their dosas come with two chutneys, tomato and coconut, and a good serving size of sambhar, perfect in proportion with the size of the dosa. All of their chutneys and their sambhar were packed with flavor. Anjappar’s not only good for dosas, but they also have a variety of South Indian food, but their dosas are a highlight on their menu. While they don’t have a large variety of dosas, they stick to the classics and they’re high on quality. They do have meat dosas on their menu, with chicken or mutton, and those are only served on weekends. To top it off, their service was the quickest on this list and their prices range from a reasonable $7.99 for a plain dosa to $13.49 for a mutton dosa – their veggie dosas don’t exceed $10.50.
3) Khalsa Pizza
Who doesn’t enjoy some freshly made ‘za every now and again? Thankfully for vegetarians, Khalsa pizza offers a menu that caters specifically to not only vegetarians but vegans as well. To top it all off, they’re vegetarian style pizza definitely isn’t like your average vegetarian pizza, it tastes homemade; in other words, you can taste the comfort and you can taste the quality. A personal test of well-made pizza for me is if I don’t need dipping sauce and the pizza from Khalsa pizza didn’t even have me thinking about anything other than the taste that was coming from the pizza itself.
Khalsa’s Pizza, located on Queen and Chrysler, is definitely a place to check out if you’re looking for more than some basic vegetarian pie from your nearest pizza place. Words won’t do it justice, head on over to Khalsa’s pizza and thank me later.
2) J Red & Co.
One thing you will notice about J Red & Co is that it’s unlike any restaurant you’ve been to in Brampton. Right when you step into the restaurant, which can be found at the intersection of Main and Vodden, the aesthetic will blow your mind. Aside from its awesome look, it’s got delicious vegetarian food on offer. Now, it is important to mention that J Red & Co. is not solely vegetarian, it is, however, vegetarian-friendly.
In fact, during my visit, the server informed me that just about any dish on the menu could be made to accommodate a vegetarian palette. Even without her telling me that, they have quite a few options on their menus such as zucchini fritters and cauliflower “wings” that essentially mimic the chicken wing style. These “wings” are accompanied by a goat cheese dip that is sure to leave you wanting more. If you’re getting this as an appetizer, be sure to get the Better Than Meat Beet Burger for your main – mouth. Watering. Delicious.
1) Brar’s Sweets and Restaurant
If you’re ready for a vegetarian feast, Brar’s is the place to go. Offering both buffet and sit-down style dining, Brar’s has a vast variety of Indian dishes and it’s all completely vegetarian food. Most of the dishes include paneer cheese as their star ingredient, but they also make great use of vegetables and potatoes as the dominant force in their cooking. Beyond solely Indian food, Brar’s puts forth some great Hakka style food as well.
They make a mean vegetarian Manchurian and paired up with their noodles you’ll be more than impressed. Found at Dixie and Advance, this vegetarian spot will leave you positively thinking that vegetarians do it right.
