Ontario Officer Arrested After Gun Discharge Sends Bullet Into Neighbour’s Home

A Peterborough police officer is facing a weapons charge after their personal firearm discharged inside a home on New Year’s Eve, police say.

The incident happened around 6:40 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2025, at the officer’s west-end home near Ireland Drive and Ravenwood Drive. The off-duty officer reported the discharge to the police.

Soon after, a neighbouring homeowner called 911 after discovering a bullet hole in a bedroom wall. Police confirmed no one was injured.

Investigators determined that one round was fired from the officer’s home. The firearm was legally owned and had been recently purchased. It was examined by an independent third party, and the Chief Firearms Officer was notified.

The officer was arrested on Wednesday and charged with careless discharge of a firearm. Their name was not released. Police say the officer has been reassigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of the case.
