Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken a jab at Ontario Premier Doug Ford after Ford said he plans to skip his usual winter trip to Florida in response to U.S. tariffs that have hurt Ontario’s auto and steel workers.
Ford made it clear the decision is personal and said he isn’t telling others to avoid Florida. He encouraged people not to let U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies “ruin their lives,” while also urging Canadians to support local tourism when possible.
DeSantis fired back online, pointing out that Florida tourism is still strong and even poked fun at hockey fans, noting Florida’s NHL teams have won Stanley Cups more recently than Toronto.
While Florida says overall tourism is up, new data shows fewer Canadians are travelling to the U.S., especially by air. Experts say trade tensions and tariffs are playing a big role, with Canadian travel to the U.S. dropping for months and hurting American businesses that rely on Canadian visitors.
Despite the back-and-forth, Ford says the choice to travel—or not—should remain a personal one.
