Ban on Speed Cameras: Do Brampton Drivers Still Owe Their Old Tickets?

Ontario’s ban on municipal speed cameras took effect on Nov. 14 — but Brampton drivers who received photo radar tickets before that date still have to pay their fines.

The City of Brampton confirmed that while the Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program has officially ended, all tickets issued on or before Nov. 13, 2025, remain valid and enforceable. Drivers still get 30 days from the ticket date to pay or dispute it through the city’s website.

Before the ban, Brampton had 185 speed cameras across the city. Despite lobbying to keep them, the provincial government shut the program down, calling photo radar ineffective and a “cash grab.”

The city now plans to repurpose the cameras for red-light enforcement and noise monitoring, while new intersection cameras with 360-degree views and license plate recognition will continue rolling out.

The province says it will help municipalities install other traffic-calming tools such as speed bumps, signage, and roundabouts.
