Canada’s aviation watchdog is raising serious safety concerns after the RCMP alleged an Air India pilot was under the influence of alcohol before a scheduled international flight out of Vancouver. Transport Canada says the incident happened on Dec. 23, when the captain of Flight AI186 from Vancouver to Vienna was reported unfit for duty and removed from the aircraft. Police say two breathalyzer tests at Vancouver International Airport confirmed alcohol impairment.
In a letter sent to Air India on Dec. 24, Transport Canada said the incident likely violates Canadian Aviation Regulations and the airline’s foreign operating certificate, adding that enforcement action could follow. Ottawa has now asked Air India to outline corrective measures by Jan. 26.
The development comes as India’s aviation regulator has also issued a separate safety notice to Air India over recent flights, citing concerns around aircraft dispatch, equipment compliance, and crew decision-making.
